Anatolij’s journey to confidence and health in the community garden

Anatolij, a Lithuanian man in his 50s, joined the Restart Scheme through Jobs 22 after being referred by Job Centre Plus in early 2023. His path to employment has been challenging, with obstacles such as a serious heart condition and limited English skills. However, through the Jobs 22 community garden project in Boston, Anatolij has found a place for healing and rediscovered his sense of purpose.

Facing a number of challenges
With limited English and chronic health concerns, including two heart procedures, Anatolij faced isolation and uncertainty about his future. "I’ve had two heart restarts, plus surgery for varicose veins," he said. "I’m taking 12 pills every day!" His Employment Coach, Santa Smith, recognised that Anatolij needed holistic support to rebuild his health and confidence. Navigating his healthcare requirements has been challenging, and he found it difficult to connect with others or pursue work, which left him feeling disconnected and frustrated.

Finding a purpose
Santa referred Anatolij to a health coach to support him with GP appointments and other health-related concerns. Recognising his need to stay active, Santa spoke with Sarah, another employment coach who was overseeing the garden project, about getting Anatolij involved. He started with light duties like litter picking and was soon drawn to the work and asked to attend more often. With his dedication evident, Sarah entrusted him with the keys to the garden, allowing him to maintain the area independently. The team empowered him as a leader, which led to him developing organisational and English-speaking skills. “When my health allows, I come here," Anatolij shared. "This project has helped me... I like physical work.”

Anatolij became a fixture at the garden, he even returned a few days after heart surgery to tend to the plants. The garden provided a healing environment, and his involvement in it improved his physical and mental health. His English skills, confidence, and sense of purpose flourished. Sarah observed, "He’s progressed massively—his routine, his communication skills, his English... he feels that he’s got purpose now.” Recently, Anatolij secured a job offer and feels stronger and ready for work. His goals include helping his son with university and returning to care for his elderly mother.

Moving onto the next chapter
For Anatolij, the garden project has been transformative. What started as a means to stay active has grown into a foundation for his future. Reflecting on his journey, Anatolij said, "This project has helped me… my plans for the future? I want to go out and get a job." The community garden not only supported his recovery but has instilled in him the confidence and resilience needed to move forward with his life.
