OVERCOMING ADVERSITY AND BUILDING A BRIGHTER FUTURE THROUGH WORK

When Northampton-based Jobs 22 Employment Coach Ella Campbell met with a participant with several barriers to work, she was determined to help them build their confidence and their future career.

The participant had been out of work for over 2 years, and prior to that had been in prison. They were released just before the pandemic which sadly coincided with the loss of two very close family members, deeply affecting their mental health and wellbeing. They were staying with their mother temporarily, with caring duties for their two daughters every weekend.

The participant had found an outlet in physical fitness and realised they wanted to work outdoors. Ella discussed their skills and knowledge and worked with them to create a CV that reflected their desired roles. The participant was very motivated so when a Jobs 22 Employment Services Consultant found a job that matched their requirements they were excited to get an interview. Wasting no time, Jobs 22 Employment Services Consultant secured an interview for the same afternoon. The participant was called into the branch, where we assisted them with their proof of ID required for the interview and arranged for high vis workwear and work boots to be reimbursed, so the participant could be confident they had the proper equipment to start work.

The participant attended their interview on a Friday afternoon and got the job, starting on the following Monday. After their induction session they phoned Ella to thank her for the time and support they had received. The participant said they were very happy to be back at work and this position had boosted their confidence and self-esteem, and touchingly revealed “life is looking good.”
